The
design of Ohio’s Learn and Serve program is based on
four guiding principles:
-
Developing a solid foundation of school and community support
through the planning process;
-
Fostering the development of high quality programs by encouraging
ongoing training, continuous improvement and expansion each
year;
-
Encouraging sustainability through the integration of service-learning
into the academic curriculum, connecting service-learning
to school improvement efforts; and building strong partnerships
through equal participation of schools and communities;
-
Utilizing the expertise of service-learning practitioners
to build statewide capacity.
Ohio schools can apply for funding through different types
of grants:
-
Development Grants – provide a $3,000 grant to involve
all stakeholders in the development of a comprehensive plan
to implement service-learning.
- Implementation
Grants - $15,000 grants to begin implementing well thought-out
plans.
- Model
Grants – are $30,000 grants. Schools apply for a model
grant once they have the capacity to provide leadership
and expertise in the field of service-learning. Successful
grantees must provide evidence of quality integration of
service-learning into the academic curriculum and expansion
of their program, and must have the capacity to provide
training and technical assistance statewide.
