The
RULH School District is a "Model School" for Learn
and Serve America. The school district is also a 21st Century
Grantee. These two grant funds worked together with students
who gathered at the Limestone Center to host the annual Senior
Citizen Prom. This year's prom served over 150 patrons from
Brown, Adams and Mason Counties. This Afterschool service
learning project took months of planning. Tina and Russ Curtis
led the students to complete another successful event. Pictured
with the senior citizens are student volunteers, Allie Costa,
Casey Tucker and Bridget Spradling. This activity engaged
students in meaningful service that was personally relevant
to all participants. It encouraged student participants to
conduct a service experience with underlying societal issues.
The issues addressed in this event included intergenerational
influences. This project proved that service-learning promotes
understanding of diversity and mutual respect for all participants.
The annual senior citizen prom helps participants actively
seek to understand and value the diverse background and perspective
of those offering and receiving service, all while everyone
is having fun and enjoying themselves. The photographer for
the event was Kim McKisson. Kim donated her time and talent
to the event. There will be additional pictures and news articles
concerning the senior citizen prom in next week's Bee.
