Attorney General Cordray Recognizes Ripley-Area Students

Kristi Scott , Ripley

Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray awarded a team of Ripley Union Lewis Huntington High School students second place in the 2009 Take Action Public Service Announcement Contest sponsored by the Ohio Attorney General’s Office and Best Buy®.

Cordray honored juniors Cameron Gulley, Tyler McGlothin and Jordan Meyer and sophomore Glenn Sherwood this month for their production of “Preventing Identity Theft,” a public service announcement about the risks of identity theft scams. This activity addressed K-12 Service Learning Standard Duration and Intensity proving that service-learning experiences provide time to address identified community needs while achieving learning outcomes. Their prize included a $750 Best Buy® gift card.

The contest challenged Ohio high school students to create a video PSA (Public Service Announcement) encouraging their peers to be smart shoppers and make smart money choices. Students also proved they had a “Youth Voice” which generated ideas and promoted decision making. Take Action received more than 140 PSA entries from more than 500 students around the state.

The students are part of an after school digital video class offered by RULH High School. This project was in conjunction with the Learn and Serve America Grant which provides meaningful service opportunities that address issues personally relevant to the participants. The class, under the direction of RULH High School Technology teacher Patty McNeilan, has been working diligently on several contest entries over the year. Ms. McNeilan integrates service learning standards into her already existing curriculum and she aligns academic and programmatic curriculum. The school is very proud of the students for their accomplishments and for placing second to Dublin Coffman High School, which is one of three large high schools in Dublin, Ohio.
