JR/SR FCCLA and Ripley Middle School FCCLA, in collaboration
with Karla Walters, Safe and Drug Free Schools Coordinator,
and Kristi Scott, Ripley Schools Grant Coordinator, planned
and conducted a “Step-Up to the Plate” food drive
in the RULH School District during the Fall of 2009. Students
and staff of the Ripley JR/SR FCCLA, Ripley Middle School FCCLA,
and Ripley Athletic Department collected food during the months
of November and December, 2009. This project kicked off with
the Red Ribbon Week Celebration Campaign conducted by Karla
Walters. Ripley DECA conducted a Staff vs. DECA members relay
games and dodge ball game to raise money for can food. Ripley
FCCLA organized the collection and competition of the can food
drive in all three buildings in the Ripley Union Lewis Huntington
School District. The can food items collected from the drive
were donated to the Community Food Pantry, housed in the Presbyterian
Church in Ripley, OH, and the Aberdeen Food Pantry, housed at
the Aberdeen Baptist Church in Aberdeen, OH. Some of the canned
food items that were donated were used to create food baskets
for families of the RULH School District as part of the “Christmas
Cheer” efforts during the 2009 holiday season. With the
tough economic times we are facing, we received numerous calls
for help and support during this holiday season.
The
Coalition for a Drug Free Southern Brown County and Kristi
Scott supported the efforts of this event by awarding the
top classroom in each school building in the Ripley School
District where students collected the most cans with a pizza
party. The classroom that collected the most food at Ripley
Elementary was Mrs. Barbie Shipley’s second grade class.
The elementary donated a total of 3,240 food items, which
is 1,874 more than last year’s “You-Can”
Food Drive. Way to go elementary students! The top classroom
at the middle school was Mrs. Vickie Vance’s sixth grade
class. Ripley Middle School contributed 2,252 food items,
which is 1,877 more than last year’s, can drive. Awesome
job middle school students! The top group at Ripley High School
was Ms. Angie Dee’s DECA organization, who donated a
total of 363 food items. Ripley High School donated 1,000
food items, which is 437 more food items than last year. The
“Step-Up to the Plate” food drive donated approximately
5,492 cans to the local food pantries in our school district.
This does not included the can food collected by the Athletic
Department’s efforts. Ripley Union Lewis Hunting School
District also won the food drive challenge in the county.
The food pantries rely on our donations to help the people
of our community. A special thank you goes out to all parents,
students, and school staff in our community who contributed
to making this food drive a major success. We would also like
to thank the local fire departments who help us assist in
the delivery of the can foods to the local pantries. Together,
if “We Step-Up to the Plate,” we can make a difference
in the RULH School District and community.
