The
annual can food drives turned into a wonderful friendly challenge
between four local service learning leader schools in Brown
and Highland Counties. Each of the school districts are Learn
and Serve America grantees which means they receive funding
from the Ohio Department of Education for the purpose of integrating
service learning into already existing curriculum. Howard Willis
led the charge at Georgetown Exempted School District and his
student body brought in over 3,500 cans of food. Janie Day,
Director of Eastern Local School District Learn and Serve programs
ignited participants who answered the call with over 6,600 cans
of food. Kara Julleriat, service learning project director at
Bright Local garnered under 1000 cans and Kristi Scott, along
with a staff of 85 and student body of 1150 at the RULH School
District "Brought Home the Proverbial Bacon" by turning
in over 7,000 cans.
All
Project Directors were pleased with the results of the first
of what will be many more challenges to serve our region.
Those most pleased were the local food pantries located in
each school district's village. Comments came from Shirley
and Cecil Black who tend the First Presbyterian Church Food
Pantry stating they have never seen the Food Pantry so full.
They were able to fill 60 baskets for Thanksgiving and 62
baskets for Christmas with plenty left over for the winter
months with what they received from the students in the RULH
School District.
All
project directors would like to extend a heartfelt "thank-you"
to all students and parents who participated in the first
ever "Regional Canned Food Challenge." Without the
generous donations of all participants, Christmas and Thanksgiving
would have be a bit less wonderful.
