Local School District: Fifth Graders Respond to Economic
Needs
Pamela
Hardyman , Eastern Local School District |
Sardinia
Elementary fifth grade students reach out to assist local families
facing economic difficulties. The students adopted the Sardinia
Community Food Pantry as a service project for the school year
of 2008-2009. Sardinia students contributed over 1500 items
to the local food pantry this year. Many items were donated
through a successful school-wide food drive initiated by the
fifth grade students. Janie Day, grant coordinator for the Eastern
Brown School District, obtained a Learn and Serve grant through
the Ohio Department of Education that provided funding for many
additional items purchased by the students.
Early in the school year, the fifth grade students studied ways
citizens contribute to the common good of their community. Students
observed that a growing number of students had one or more parents
that had lost jobs. After discussing the consequences of lost
jobs on families, the students considered options that were
available to fifth graders to help meet the needs of these families.
The students’ desire to make a difference in their community
led them to plan, advertise, collect, and purchase food and
other essential items for the local community food pantry. Resource
teacher, Mrs. Cindy Moberly, took students Hannah McCarty, Austin
Doss and Josh Bowman to Martin’s Super Value to purchase
non food items such as deodorant, shampoo, toothpaste, etc.
The funds were provided through the Learn and Serve grant.
Leigh Ann Granger, representative of the community food pantry,
housed at the Sardinia Methodist Church, stated “I am
still impressed by the outstanding job they did with their winter
food drive.” The students collected about 1200 items in
early December. As spring arrived, Mrs. Granger informed the
class that since November more than 200 individuals had received
assistance from the food pantry and that the pantry was now
in need of certain items; breakfast foods, pork & beans,
crackers, etc.
The grant provided funds for all fifth grade students to go
to the West Union Walmart to purchase these items. The 29 students
had a total of $300 to spend. Each student was given a $10 limit
allowing for a ten dollar leeway. The total cost of all items
was $299.64! It was estimated that the students purchased between
300-500 items.
Prior to the trip the students learned about nutritional items
versus snack foods and making wise financial choices. They studied
estimation of cost, reading labels and price comparisons. This
hands-on project served as a learning model and benefited the
children as well as the local community.
Students who participated in the class project were as follows
Paul Aldridge, Sabrina Beyer, Bekah Colliver, Vanessa Corboy,
Rebecca Cowan, Morgan Holden, Danny Hopkins, Adrian Hunter,
Makayela Johnson, Jordan Mingua, Mikey Newkirk, Kara Overstake,
Kayla Tomlin, Caleb Troutman, Jacob Wilson, Josh Bowman, Shelby
Daley, Austin Doss, McKaila Farahay, Colin Graham, Preston Kellenberger,
Morgan Long, Hannah McCarty, Jazmyn Pierce, Ethan Puckett, Kendall
Purdy, Vanessa Rose, Jacob Simpson and Jessica Tolle. Teachers
assisting students were Miss Pamela Hardyman, Mrs. Janey Silcott,
Mrs. Valerie Krentz, and Mrs. Cindy Moberly.
