Local School District: S.A.D.D. Promotes Seat Belt Safety
Janie
Day , Eastern Local School District |
Eastern
S.A.D.D. members (Students Against Destructive Decisions) decided
to take a stand to buckle up and be safe. Over a 6 week period,
various activities took place at Eastern High School to teach
the students about Seat Belt Safety. This project was a service
learning safety project. These activities include 104 white
crosses were put out in front of the school to represent the
104 people that have been killed in car accidents in Brown County
in 2008.
It is a proven fact that more teens are killed in crashes than
any other age group because either they do not buckle up, don’t
pay attention to the road, drive with other teens, speed, do
not check for other traffic, or by driving drowsily.
Eastern S.A.D.D. also passed out pledges to the staff members
at Eastern High School so that they too will buckle up and be
safe. Teen driver lifestyle of staying up late makes teen drivers
at high risk for having a motor vehicle crash due to drowsiness.
One week, S.A.D.D. did a seatbelt check where they stopped incoming
drivers to see if they were wearing their seatbelt. Students
wearing their seatbelts received candy.
The Ohio Department of Public Safety Crash Statistics says that
88 teens (ages 16-20) were injured in 2008 in Brown County traffic
crashes. Some other activities that took place at Eastern High
School were Grim Reaper Day where S.A.D.D. members randomly
selected students to be “dead” for the day, representing
that every 12 minutes someone in the United States die in a
car accident each day. There were also visual displays and hand
outs throughout the weeks to get the message out. Please help
to support Eastern S.A.D.D.’s message by also wearing
your seatbelt when riding or driving in a motor vehicle and
by driving safely.
