Learn & Serve Ohio Recognition Award Winners
Ripley-Union-Lewis-Huntington School District
The
Ohio Department of Education’s Learn and Serve Ohio
staff would like to recognize and present the 2010 Learn and
Serve Ohio Certificate of Recognition Award to Kristi Scott,
Ripley-Union-Lewis –Huntington School District (RULH)
for her commitment and leadership to service-learning in Ohio
schools and communities.
RULH’s
Project Environmental Service-learning (ESL) program involves
all students attending kindergarten through 12th grade. Forty-five
(45) well-trained service-learning teachers provide over 1,350
students with service-learning opportunities as part of their
ongoing education, which not only enriches their education
but also allows them to build and foster relationships while
serving numerous community partners and meeting critical community
needs.
Service-learning
is integrated into the K-12 math, science, Language Arts,
citizenship and technology curriculum. Students engage in
quality service-learning opportunities that are cognitively
engaging, meaningful, and connect what students are learning
to their service in the community. For example, older students
tutor elementary students to improve academic performance.
Science students test local streams and ponds for water quality
and report their findings to the community by writing articles
for the local newspaper. History and citizenship students
study the civil war and perform service projects at the local
Underground Railroad Museums.
As
a National Service-learning Leader School, a key aspect of
ESL is to create partnerships for the betterment of their
community, and provide quality training and technical assistance
to interested educators across Ohio by mentoring new grantees
and providing resources and on-site assistance.
Please
join me in congratulating Kristi Scott for receiving the 2010
Learn and Serve Ohio Certificate of Recognition Award!
